Bronze Africa ‘Swamp Ghost’

This commissioned bronze portrays a male Sitatunga, created for a Safari Outfitter in Uganda. The Sitatunga is a species I came to know intimately during my years as a hunting guide – an elusive, almost spectral antelope that revealed itself only after long hours of patience in the papyrus swamps. Its secretive habits and aquatic terrain set it apart from the antelope most visitors encounter on the well-worn safari circuits.

For that reason, the Sitatunga remains virtually unknown to the casual traveler, yet it is one of Africa’s most coveted and respected trophies. Its rarity in the wild translates directly into the world of art: few sculptures exist of this mysterious animal, making each piece an uncommon find for the discerning collector.

That aura of mystery — the sense of an animal half-seen, half-imagined, inspired me to call this work Swamp Ghost.
