Bronze Africa ‘Piss Off’

For over a century, hunting in Africa has attracted those in search of the “biggest and the best.” Yet in recent decades, conservation-minded hunters have raised concerns about this tradition. The relentless selection of the largest and finest specimens has, over time, diminished trophy quality, as these prime animals are removed from the breeding pool and replaced by lesser bulls.

In response, a new ethos has emerged — particularly among Cape Buffalo hunters. Instead of pursuing size, many now seek out the oldest, most battle-worn bulls: cantankerous, secretive, and often dangerous. These veterans of the bush, with their broken horns and wary temperaments, have earned their own prestige, embodying resilience rather than perfection.

This sculpture, titled ‘Piss Off’, captures exactly that spirit. It is a tribute to the grizzled old dagga boys of Africa — buffalo whose character and presence rival, and often surpass, the grandeur of the so-called “biggest and best.”
