I never hunted one of these wonderful tank-like creatures and really did not need to. They were abundant in the Zambezi Valley when we were operating in the Chewore Safari area but alas today there is not one to be seen there. Those that were not poached were translocated toward the centre of the country where it was decided they would be safe from the ravages of the poacher but even in the interior of the country they are under the guns of illegal hunting.

If you have never seen one of these animals when he is aroused and angry then it is probably impossible to describe it. He is like a tank, simply ploughs his way through cover that would stall a 4×4 truck and worse he seldom runs away but runs toward where he thinks you are. The huffing sound he makes at this time seriously gets your attention. Those of us that experienced this animal while on foot in the thickets of the Valley must count ourselves among the luckiest folks who love the great outdoors.
